As a Writing Consultant, you will be working with students of varying ages, skill levels, and cultural backgrounds on their assignments and projects. After completing a College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA)-based training module, you will be qualified to assist and give students feedback on grammar, organization, formatting, clarity, and other topics through face-to-face sessions, over email, and/or via video call. Writing Consultants assist with a variety of writing—not just academic essays. A position in the Writing Center isn’t just for English majors! Anyone with a strong grasp on composition and a willingness to learn can gain insightful and universally applicable skills from their time as a Writing Consultant. You’ll practice power skills like communication and empathy with your clients, as well as hard skills like technology proficiency, clerical management skills, and project management skills—all real experience and real success.

As the Administrative Assistant in the Writing Center, you'll be our face and representative for visitors, often being the first and last person they talk to. During your shift, you'll be greeting people and answering their questions, including assisting them with technology or making appointments, in-person and occasionally on the phone.
The Administrative Assistant, in order to be able to assist clientele and coworkers, will review materials to be familiar with (but not perform) the jobs of the Writing Consultants. This will also aid in managing walk-in clients amid consultant openings. Smaller tasks fall under your jurisdiction as well such as cleaning the tables and break area, stocking the candy bowl, tracking supplies, and curating social media posts.
These desk duties keep the office running smoothly, and their continued practice help you gain clerical experience, communication skills, and management skills that can be carried forward to many business sectors—all real experience and real success.
